12th August FONTE DOS CLERIGOS

It’s been so much cooler today, and quite windy, which actually makes a nice change.

Practically all the seeds that we planted at the beginning of the week have now germinated, so we’re feeling much more positive about our garden; if Joao and Ilda can have a productive vegetable garden we should be able to too, we just have to learn to do it the Portuguese way.

Joao gave us some bean seeds (like yellow flat runner beans) he said they should be planted now, so they went in today; we tried to plant them in troughs so that they would be easy to water. The Portuguese water into channels and have this special tool to open and close sections so that water can be diverted to and away from plants and trees – it’s very impressive to watch.

Tonight we went to the festa; we arrived at 9.00 there were a few people there, some beer stalls and a large stage. There was a man playing the accordion on a smaller raised plinth. Gradually the crowd increased and at 11.30ish a group came onto the stage. But really there wasn’t much happening; just lots of people socialising; we left around midnight and again it carried on until the early hours.
