15th August FONTE DOS CLERIGOS

We had a ‘dark and stormy night’; just after midnight the wind picked up, we were worried about the gazebos collapsing again, but there was nothing we could do about them. We got up and folded up the outside chairs (one had been blown a few metres out of the gazebo). And then about 3.00 a.m. the rains came; big, ploppy, heavy rain, that lasted for over an hour.

When I went outside with my coffee this morning everything was still wet and the rain had fallen so hard that mud was splattered over everything less than a foot from the ground – i.e. the chairs we’d collapsed, completely covered in mud and wet. I went back inside to drink my coffee!

After the heavy rain in the night we had the opportunity to check all our roofs; and they all seem quite water tight.

The escarole had picked up overnight; probably all the extra water helped. And all my seeds are coming through now apart from the Rosemary.

We went into Fundao to get supplies; on the way back we stopped at the Fonte in Alpedrinha to fill up our water bottles (7 X 5L).

After lunch we drove to find the short cut to Pam and Mark’s; there was a gate across the route we needed to take so we couldn’t use it. When we went there this evening we measured the distance from us to them, it’s more or less 1½ miles. We were going to cycle to Pam and Mark’s but my battery was completely out of charge, so Brett drove. We ate outside, under their gazebo, watching the sun set.
